Features of the Yokogawa AQ1210 optical reflectometer

Compact build with a long-lasting battery

  • Takes up the footprint of a medium “Mini” tablet, weighing 1 kg
  • 10 hours of battery operation
  • Charging via the USB port

Touchscreen and physical buttons
The AQ1210 has a wide, 5.7-inch multi-touch LCD touchscreen as well as a rotary jog dial that is handy for field use.

Many functions in one device

Increased performance
The AQ1210 provides:

  • Passive optical network (PON) measurements with 1×128 splitters
  • Ultra-fast real-time measurements
  • A smart mapping function with variable-pulse-width measurement
  • Multi-fiber measurements
  • Automatic ferrule end-face analysis (optional)

Connectivity
Remote access is possible via Wi-Fi or an ETHERNET connection.

Two operating methods
Touchscreen and keys
Tap, drag, pinch or press. Choose between the high-resolution 5.7-inch multi-touch screen (which detects touch capacitively for multiple fingers independently) or the traditional keys. Any combination is allowed. Operating an OTDR has never been so simple and intuitive!

A continuation of the multi-touch operation description, showing a second screen view for a better understanding of the user interface.

Smart Mapper function
Measurement at the touch of a single button. Comprehensive network analysis. A clear report.
Measurement with different test pulse widths using an intelligent algorithm lets users detect and comprehensively analyse individual events at the touch of a single button. The simple “map” view of the cable route, based on clear icons, allows easy interpretation of network events. Instant PASS/FAIL (Good/Bad) assessment based on user-defined ranges. Easy switching between the “map” and OTDR-trace views allows convenient additional analysis.

Durable battery
Over 10 hours!
No more worrying about the battery running out during daily work. The AQ1210 is fitted with a high-capacity Li-Ion battery lasting 10 hours of operation in line with the Telcordia standard requirements.

Instant start-up time
Under 10 seconds!
The OTDR is ready to measure in less than 10 seconds from being switched on!

Multitasking
Increased productivity
The AQ1210 is managed by a very efficient operating system; many functions can run in parallel and be displayed simultaneously on screen. Now, while taking an OTDR measurement of a specific fiber, users can simultaneously check the power level and ferrule end-face cleanliness on the remaining connectors.

Measurement speed and precision in real time
Depending on whether the user is only trying to determine the fiber length or to locate a bend, they can now choose between two measurement modes: high-speed (Hi-Speed), which shortens the measurement time, and precise (Hi-Precision), capable of accurately reproducing the fiber characteristics.

PDF reporting
A built-in document processor allows generating measurement reports in PDF format. The device can modify reports to meet every user’s requirements.

File transfer and remote control
File transfer
Files from the AQ1210 can be transferred to a phone or tablet via Wi-Fi and an ordinary web browser or the dedicated OTDR data transporter program. Also to a Windows™ PC using Wi-Fi or LAN, via a browser or the AQ7933 emulation program.

Remote control
The AQ1210 can be controlled remotely from a phone or tablet using a web browser, and from a Windows™ PC with a web browser or the AQ7933 emulation application. Commands can also be sent directly over the Wi-Fi or LAN network.

Multi-fiber link measurement
Tabular view. Organised. Quick overview of characteristics
The application inside the OTDR allows previewing and organising multi-fiber link measurements in a tabular form. It supports cable measurement without letting you forget any of the fibers. The OTDR trace, power-level readings and ferrule end-face image of each fiber are organised as a single group. Thanks to the Pass/Fail (Good/Bad) assessment, fibers needing correction can be easily flagged.

Assured connector quality
Using a video-microscope probe*, we can verify the connector ferrule end-face for scratches and contamination. The ferrule end-face inspection function (optional) can automatically assess a connector as GOOD/Bad (PASS/FAIL) based on the IEC61300-3-35 standard or other criteria.
* Recommended probe: DI-1000-B2 (Lightel)

Macrobend detection
Bends occurring on the tested fiber can be automatically detected and located by comparing measurements taken at multiple wavelengths and analysing them against user-defined thresholds.

OTDR view
The OTDR view can be easily switched between the trace view and the event map view. Simply touch the icon on screen. The trace is the traditional method of presenting OTDR measurement results and their analysis; the event map is a friendly, easy-to-interpret form of presenting results and events based on intuitive icons. It is also used in the Smart Mapper function.

Advanced trace analysis
Multi-trace analysis
Up to four plots on one trace enable comparative analysis. A helpful function for analysing and locating problems in multi-fiber links.

Bidirectional measurement
Overlays two measurements taken at both ends of the link and marks the correct insertion loss of events. At junctions of fibers with different backscatter levels, the losses estimated by the OTDR may differ depending on the measurement direction. In such cases, averaging the measurement from two directions allows the event loss to be determined accurately.

Differential trace
Displays the difference between two measurements. It helps determine the degree of degradation of fibers and connectors and shows the impact of various phenomena on fiber characteristics

Section analysis (optical return loss)
Allows determining the optical return loss of a specific fiber section. Analysis of the total return loss of a link may be necessary in cases where it could be harmful by interfering with sources (e.g. in cable television networks).

Enlarging the trace window
By simply touching a dedicated icon you can enlarge the trace window for greater comfort when working with the trace.

Direct data save
By pressing the “Direct save” icon we can easily save the results in SOR, PDF or both formats at once (according to the user’s preferences).

Loss measurement using a light source and power meter
Loss measurement using the transmission method is based on measuring the power at the end of the launch cable (P1) and subtracting from it the power measured at the end of the tested fiber (P2). Total fiber loss = P1 − P2 (dB)

Automatic loss measurement
The AQ1210 can send information about the source power and wavelength to another AQ1210 OTDR at the far end of the tested fiber. Thanks to this, the devices can automatically switch sources and power meters between the 1310 and 1550 nm wavelengths, eliminating the risk of error.
* /the /SPM or /HPM option is required.

Transmission measurement of multi-fiber links
The function uses two AQ1210 OTDRs (one as Master and the other as slave) and a communication channel created inside the tested fiber. The devices can share project information including the number of fibers being tested and the measurement conditions. In this way they ensure the correct measurement parameters for each fiber of the tested cable.
* the /SPM or /HPM function is required.

PON signal power measurement
Simultaneous power measurement for the 1490 and 1550 nm wavelengths
The PON power meter can measure the optical power of signals at 1490 nm and 1550 nm simultaneously thanks to their separation. A convenient solution for measuring PON signal power from an OLT and V-OLT.
*the /PPM option is required
