TDR test — Smart Trace: fault location

TDR (Time Domain Reflectometry) is a powerful tool for diagnosing faults in data cables. Traditional TDR testers cannot distinguish inline connectors from irrelevant anomalies such as cable bends. TestPro introduces Smart Trace — intelligent limit setting that precisely pinpoints faults while suppressing connector peaks.

Results are also presented as an event map, showing the cable with identified connectors matched to a predefined configuration. Unexpected elements are represented as faults. Smart Trace compares the measurement against a known-good cable reference, displaying deviations as faults on the trace and in the event table.

Configuring TDR limits and cable parameters:

The user can define the cable configuration (number of connectors, their positions and expected characteristics) as well as individual TDR limits for each segment. Custom limits allow precise control of tolerances for each cable harness, eliminating false alarms and ensuring test repeatability.

Return Loss test

TestPro performs frequency-domain return loss (reflection) measurements across the full frequency range of the cable. A separate Pass/Fail limit can be defined independently for TDR and return loss. With the AD-6G-1P adapter, measurements are performed up to 6 GHz. For the remaining automotive adapters, measurements reach up to 3 GHz.

Results management — TestDataPro

Test results are stored in the tester’s memory and can be transferred to the TestDataPro software (PC or cloud) for logging, tracking and documenting results, with export to PDF or CSV.

Live Test mode enables continuous, real-time TDR measurements. It is especially useful during physical manipulation of the harness — it lets you instantly observe how bending, squeezing or moving the cable affects the reflection characteristic, making it easier to locate faults sensitive to mechanical stress.
