Albedo Net.Edge – PTP Distribution (Boundary / Transparent Clock)

Albedo Net.Edge is an edge PTP time distribution node – configurable as a Boundary Clock or Transparent Clock – with TDM-over-packet, C37.94 teleprotection modernization and substation-grade IEC 61850-3 / IEEE 1613 classification.

Albedo Net.Edge delivers Net.Time time services across the entire WAN and in substations. It can be configured as a Boundary Clock (BC) or Transparent Clock (TC), carrying PTP all the way to the network edge, where it filters and regenerates the signal. Bringing time closer to the receiver means the last mile no longer depends on long, variable WAN paths – delays and playback are repeatable, which eliminates false alarms in protection systems.

Key advantages of Net.Edge

  • Boundary Clock and Transparent Clock – PTP distribution at the network edge
  • TDM-over-packet – migration of C37.94 / E1 / serial channels onto packet networks without replacing protection equipment
  • 8 optical SFP ports (2×2.5 GbE + 6×1 GbE), 11 Gb/s switching matrix
  • MPLS-TP + 1:1 protection, VLAN Q-in-Q, SyncE and IEEE 1588 PTP
  • Hitless path protection and C37.94 asymmetry test
  • AES-256 encryption and authentication for transported services
  • Substation grade: IEC 61850-3 / IEEE 1613, −20…+65°C, IP40, fanless, 2× DC input
  • Aggregation of SCADA, RTU and IP camera traffic alongside the time signal (classes of service / private circuits)

Applications

  • PTP distribution in power utility WAN/LAN networks
  • Teleprotection modernization (C37.94, E1) over packet networks
  • Boundary / Transparent clock in substations
  • OT traffic aggregation (SCADA, RTU, IP cameras) while preserving time quality

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

What is the difference between a Boundary Clock and a Transparent Clock?

A Boundary Clock recovers and redistributes PTP time as a local master (it terminates the PTP domain), whereas a Transparent Clock corrects the timestamps for the device’s delay on the fly. Net.Edge supports both modes, selected according to the network topology.

Why use Net.Edge together with a Net.Time clock?

Net.Time acts as the grandmaster at selected points, while Net.Edge distributes time across the area – it shortens PTP paths, improves quality and extends synchronization coverage across the entire power network.

Can teleprotection be modernized without replacing the protection equipment?

Yes. Net.Edge carries C37.94 / E1 / serial channels over a packet network (TDM-over-packet) without interfering with the protection devices, with hitless switching and asymmetry control.
