AEM Network Service Assistant (NSA) – Structured Cabling Qualifier+ | Certi-Lite CAT6A, PoE, Multi-Gig, Wi-Fi

AEM Network Service Assistant (NSA) is a revolutionary next-generation multifunction network qualifier that bridges the gap between a basic cable tester and a full structured-cabling certifier. Using patented Certi-Lite technology – compliant with ANSI/TIA-1152-A – the NSA runs advanced single-ended CAT3–CAT6A channel tests with a complete set of electrical measurements: IL, RL, NEXT, PSNEXT, ACRF, PSACRF and TDR analysis. It is the only device in its price class combining copper cabling qualification+, SM/MM fiber testing with OTDR, PoE measurement up to 90 W (802.3bt), Multi-Gig SNR analysis up to 10 Gigabit Ethernet and Wi-Fi network diagnostics at 2.4/5 GHz – all in a single, portable device.
The NSA is the ideal tool for structured cabling installers, IT departments and maintenance technicians who need deep LAN diagnostics without investing in a full lab-grade certifier. The NSA perfectly complements the range – where full bidirectional certification with a warranty report is required, the AEM TestPro CV100 certifier steps in.

Qualification+ vs. cabling certification – the key difference

Many organizations ask themselves: when is cabling qualification enough, and when is full LAN certification essential? The answer depends on project requirements and the warranties needed.

ALI – Advanced Link Identification + Live Wiremap

ALI – Advanced Link Identification + Live Wiremap

ALI remote terminators with numeric IDs (#1–#8) support the full Certi-Lite test and display the pair map in real time the moment they are connected – without running an Autotest. Tempo tone probe with a 50/60 Hz filter for tracing cables in electrically noisy environments.

Certi-Lite technology – single-ended CAT3–CAT6A channel test (ANSI/TIA-1152-A)

Certi-Lite is the NSA’s flagship measurement technology: a single-ended channel test of CAT3, CAT5e, CAT6, CAT6A copper cabling compliant with ANSI/TIA-1152-A. ALI (Advanced Link Identification) remote terminators placed at the far end of the cable let a single technician run the full electrical test – without needing a second full-featured instrument at the other end of the run.
The Certi-Lite test result is presented as a clear PASS / FAIL broken down by individual parameter, allowing you to quickly identify and locate the problem. The NSA automatically indicates whether the tested channel can support the required network application – from Fast Ethernet to 10 Gigabit Ethernet.
Measured Certi-Lite parameters (PASS/FAIL criteria):
Channel length, propagation delay (Delay), delay skew

DC loop resistance, pair-to-pair resistance unbalance

Insertion Loss (IL), Return Loss (RL)

NEXT (Near-End Crosstalk), PSNEXT (Power Sum NEXT)

ACRF (Attenuation to Crosstalk Ratio Far-end), PSACRF (Power Sum ACRF)

Network compliance, characteristic impedance

RL Locator TDR, NEXT Locator TDR, Shield Locator TDR (informational)

Typical Certi-Lite test applications:
• Re-qualifying existing CAT5e cabling for CAT6A or 10GbE requirements

• Diagnosing network connectivity problems and low link speed

• Documenting the state of a cabling installation – generating PASS/FAIL reports

• Moves, adds and changes to infrastructure (MAC – Moves, Adds, Changes)

• Qualifying cabling for smart building requirements (Smart Building, BMS)

• Verifying PoE installations – testing cabling under simultaneous PoE load

ALI remote terminators – Live Wiremap with numeric link identifiers

ALI (Advanced Link Identification) remote terminators used for NSA Certi-Lite tests take installation diagnostics to a whole new level. The Live Wiremap function with numeric identifiers – up to 8 different IDs – lets a technician instantly sort out cables that were not properly labeled or were incorrectly terminated.
The wire pair map is displayed in real time the moment a remote terminator is detected – without running a full Autotest. Studies show that a significant share of structured cabling failures stem precisely from wiremap errors (reversed pairs, split pair, crossed links). The NSA detects and graphically reports all of these errors instantly.

Advanced TDR fault locators – RL, NEXT and Shield Locator

The NSA features three specialized fault locators based on TDR (Time Domain Reflectometry) technology, enabling precise location of the fault along the cable run – to within a meter. It is an essential tool for diagnosing CAT6A-class LAN networks in smart buildings, data centers and corporate campuses.
RL Locator – locating Return Loss faults
Return Loss faults can be hard to diagnose – they may result from faulty RJ-45 connectors, poor cable quality, too tight a bend radius or a kink in the cable. The NSA provides RL-specific TDR analysis, pinpointing the exact location of the worst RL fault on the link – dramatically cutting repair time.
NEXT Locator – locating crosstalk faults (Near-End Crosstalk)
NEXT problems appear with faulty connectors, incorrect pair twist, daisy-chained connections or excessive untwisting of the cable pairs. The NEXT Locator TDR precisely indicates the fault location along the cable run, allowing it to be effectively fixed without dismantling the whole installation.
Shield Locator – locating shield breaks in F/UTP, S/FTP, U/FTP cables
Shielded cabling (F/UTP, SF/UTP, U/FTP, S/FTP) requires shield continuity along the whole channel length to meet CAT6A requirements. The Shield Locator TDR makes it possible to identify breaks, discontinuities or shield problems, giving the exact distance to the fault. An essential tool for installations in high electromagnetic interference (EMI) environments.

PoE (Power over Ethernet) tests – 802.3af, 802.3at, 802.3bt, UPoE up to 90 W

The NSA supports the full range of Power over Ethernet standards: IEEE 802.3af (15.4 W), 802.3at Type 2 (30 W), 802.3bt Type 3 (60 W), 802.3bt Type 4 (90 W) and Cisco UPoE. PoE Load Testing includes:
PSE source validation – detecting and reporting the PoE class of the switch/injector

Real-time current, voltage and power measurement with instantaneous value display

Long-term PSE load testing – verifying power stability under nominal load

Multi-Gig SNR run simultaneously under PoE load and network traffic – a reliable result under real conditions

• Reporting via TestDataPro with current and voltage charts

PoE test applications: IP camera (CCTV) installations, VoIP phones, wireless access points (Wi-Fi APs), access control systems, BMS/IoT sensors, information displays, smart building controllers.

Multi-Gig SNR and network diagnostics – 100M, 1G, 2.5G, 5G, 10G BASE-T

The NSA runs a Multi-Gig SNR Autotest for 100 Mbps, 1 GbE, 2.5 GbE, 5 GbE and 10 GbE speeds – verifying the real ability of the cable channel to support a given transmission rate under real traffic and PoE load. SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio) is measured under active network traffic, giving reliable results in production conditions.
NSA network diagnostic functions:
Network device discovery – CDP (Cisco Discovery Protocol), LLDP, mDNS

Switch details – slot, port, VLAN, device name, vendor ID

Traceroute and Ping – verifying packet route and latency to the gateway, DNS server, IP address

Network traffic generator – loading the Ethernet link to verify transmission quality

TCP Connect – testing TCP connections to servers and network services

• DHCP, IP address discovery, DNS test – complete TCP/IP stack diagnostics

Inline PoE Link Testing – testing a PoE port without disconnecting the end device (camera, VoIP phone)

Wireless Wi-Fi network diagnostics (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz):
• Auto-detection of SSID networks in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands

• RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) measurement – signal level for individual APs

• Roaming analysis and identification of Wi-Fi coverage dead zones

• Wi-Fi signal map – useful for planning and verifying wireless network installations

SM/MM fiber testing – Loopback, OTDR, VFL, connector inspection

With the optional AD-NSA-SM-01 / AD-NSA-MM-01 fiber adapter, the NSA becomes a complete tester for both single-mode (SM) and multimode (MM) fiber cabling. The adapter equips the NSA with a dual light source for loopback testing, and the results automatically report the supported network speeds.
NSA Fiber Test – SM and MM loopback:
Multimode MM: 850 nm and 1300 nm wavelengths; LED source; range up to 2 km; loop loss 0–10 dB

Single-mode SM: 1310 nm and 1550 nm wavelengths; Fabry-Perot laser; range up to 20 km; loss 0–20 dB

• Automatic report of supported network speeds based on the measured loss

• DC resistance measurement for hybrid cables (Hybrid Powered Fiber) – combining data and power

OTDR adapters – optical reflectometry:
AD-OTDR-U-1310_1625 – SM, 1310/1625 nm; range 80 km (1310) / 130 km (1625)

AD-OTDR-U-1310_1550 – SM, 1310/1550 nm; dynamic range 29 dB (1310) / 27 dB (1550)

AD-OTDR-U-850_1300 – MM, 850/1300 nm; dynamic range 25 dB (850) / 27 dB (1300)

• OTDR adapters compatible with both the NSA and the TestPro platform – one investment for both devices

Fiber endface inspection:
Connector contamination is one of the leading causes of problems in fiber networks. The PROBE-FIBER-INSP inspection probe, connected to the NSA’s USB port, allows visual inspection of SC, LC, FC, ST connectors and identification of contamination or core/cladding scratches that can degrade the signal or damage active equipment.
The NSA also has a built-in VFL (Visual Fault Locator) – a visual fault locator emitting red 650 nm light, enabling cable tracing and location of fiber breaks or bends.
