A modern, multi-purpose OTDR with exceptionally high technical parameters. Particularly recommended for high-volume FTTH network testing thanks to its high dynamic range (measurements through 1:128 splitters and larger) and an exceptionally short measurement time.
The Yokogawa AQ7280 optical reflectometer is a flagship, modular OTDR backed by more than 40 years of Yokogawa experience in optical reflectometry. Designed with fiber optic network installers and maintenance teams in mind – from FTTH/PON access networks to backbone networks and laboratory research. It combines top-class technical parameters with exceptional field ergonomics.
Yokogawa has been building optical reflectometers since 1981, when it introduced the AQ-1702 – the world’s first single-mode OTDR. In 2002 Yokogawa acquired Ando Electric, strengthening its position as an industry leader. The AQ7280, introduced in 2014, is the fruit of more than four decades of engineering experience.
The AQ7280 is a modular platform with 13 interchangeable OTDR units and 5 OPM/VLS modules – giving a total of 84 possible configurations. Modules can be swapped in the field by the user with ordinary tools, or even a coin. It is an investment that grows with your needs – today’s access-network OTDR can be expanded tomorrow to measure backbone networks.

SmartMapper – automatic one-button network mapping
The SmartMapper function automatically performs a series of measurements with variable pulse widths, combines the results and presents the network as a graphical map with pass/fail analysis for each event. Multiple fibers, multiple wavelengths and multiple pulse widths – all at the press of a single button. Events that exceed the limits are marked in red, enabling instant identification of problems.
PON measurements – optimised for passive networks
PON mode automatically selects the optimal measurement parameters based on the chosen network architecture. Combined with High SNR mode, the OTDR delivers a high-quality trace even after large losses on the optical splitter. It supports measurements through 1:256 splitters (with a 50 dB dynamic range).
Multi-fiber measurement system – up to 2000 fibers
The tabular measurement-organisation system (patented by Yokogawa) allows management of up to 2000 fibers in a single project. Each fiber is linked to an OTDR file, attenuation data and a connector inspection image. Colour-coding of the table cells indicates the status and result of each measurement.
Advanced OTDR trace analysis
The AQ7280 main platform supports four advanced analysis types:
Multi-tasking
While an OTDR measurement is running, you can simultaneously use: the optical power meter (OPM), the stabilised light source (SLS), the visual fault locator (VLS) and the connector inspection camera. Working in parallel rather than in sequence dramatically shortens installation time.
On-device PDF report generation
The AQ7280 generates professional measurement reports in PDF format directly on the device – with a configurable template layout, report preview and the ability to batch-create multiple reports at once. Documentation is ready right at the installation site.
Fault Locator – automatic fiber-break detection
Fault Locator mode automatically detects and displays the location of a fiber break based on the selected network architecture. A single button press switches back to OTDR mode for detailed analysis.
Schedule Measurement – network monitoring
The scheduling function automatically performs OTDR measurements at defined time intervals – ideal for detecting network discontinuities caused by intermittent events (rain, vibration, freezing). Changes in attenuation over time are presented on a logarithmic chart.
Remote control and data transfer
The AQ7280 supports file transfer and remote control over a USB cable or LAN network (/LAN option). SD cards with built-in WiFi enable wireless data transfer to a smartphone or PC without stopping the measurement. Remote control via a web browser or the dedicated AQ7933 software.
The large, bright 8.4″ TFT display (800×600) is perfectly visible even in full sunlight. Operation via the Multi-Touch screen (pinch zoom, dragging as on a smartphone) or physical keys and a jog dial – every technician can choose their preferred mode. The trace display area can be expanded to 160% with a single gesture. The interface supports more than 14 languages, including Polish.
