The modified Holzworth noise analyzers are designed to perform a measurement quickly and efficiently without unnecessary trouble.
The HA7000 is a series of Holzworth Instrumentation phase noise analyzers using real-time cross-correlation. A design based on a pair of independent, low-noise LO synthesizers and a dual-core correlation engine makes it possible to measure sources with a noise level better than the local oscillators of the measurement system itself. The distinguishing feature of the series is the External LO Mode, which shortens the measurement of the best oscillators — e.g. high-end OCXOs — from minutes or hours to just a few seconds. The fanless design limits the effect of microphonics on the measurement result.
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Model / feature | Description |
| HA7062C | Phase noise analyzer 10 MHz – 6 GHz (optionally above 20 GHz); operation with internal or external LOs |
| HA7062D | Range 10 MHz – 26 GHz (option up to 40 GHz); offsets 0.1 Hz – 100 MHz; 1U rack enclosure, fanless design |
| HA7402C | Cross-correlation measurement engine operating exclusively with the user’s external LOs |
| Measurement method | Real-time cross-correlation (10×, 100× and more correlations to lower the intrinsic noise floor) |
| External LO Mode | Connection of two non-coherent user sources as LOs — measurement of objects with noise better than the analyzer’s internal synthesizers |
The optimal measurement situation is one in which the system’s local oscillators have noise equal to or better than the object under test. When the tested oscillator outperforms the analyzer’s internal synthesizers, multiple correlations are required, which extends the measurement time. The External LO Mode solves this problem: the user connects two non-coherent, high-end sources (e.g. voltage-tuned reference oscillators) that take over the role of the measurement path LOs. In practice, this makes it possible to measure the phase noise of a high-end OCXO within seconds. The HA7062C offers this mode alongside operation with internal LOs, while the HA7402C works exclusively with external sources. An application note dedicated to OCXO measurements is available in the downloads section.
