Temperature and strain measurement using optical fiber – the system is based on Brillouin scattering.
Reliable and continuous structural monitoring
Continuous monitoring is essential for managing the risk and maintenance of large structures. Where kilometers of concrete, steel or soil must be monitored for early failure detection, distributed optical fiber sensors are an efficient tool for this purpose.
Thanks to its industry-leading accuracy, fibrisTerre’s unique BOFDA technology meets the reliability requirements of long-term monitoring of pipelines, power cables routed along roads and geotechnical infrastructure.
The fTB 2505 system uses standard optical fibers (the same as in everyday telecommunications) as continuous, long-distance temperature and pressure sensors. The use of additional coatings allows for reliable and versatile implementation in soil and rigid structures.
Brillouin scattering detection
Two waves introduced into the two ends of the optical fiber meet, causing vibrations and creating an acoustic wave inside the fiber. Under the influence of this acoustic wave, the light arriving at the instrument carries information about the speed of sound propagation in the fiber, which in turn provides information about its strain and temperature.
