AFL VFI4 – Visual Fault Locator (VFL, 650 nm)

The AFL VFI4 is a compact visual fault locator (VFL) that launches a high-power red laser into the fiber, delivering exceptional brightness and range when locating defects in single-mode and multimode fibers. Light escapes at sharp bends, breaks and mismatched connectors, allowing the technician to instantly pinpoint the fault.

  • Eye-safe Class 3R laser, 650 nm (High Power version)
  • 5.0 mW output power and range up to 10 km (High Power)
  • Low Power version VFI4-L: 1.0 mW, 4 km range
  • Universal connector interface — no adapter swapping required
  • 2.5 mm and 1.25 mm adapters included (FC, SC, ST, LC, MU)
  • Continuous (CW) and pulsing mode; up to 30 h of operation on a single AA battery
  • Fault location within the dead zone of an OTDR

The visual fault locator (VFI), also known as a VFL (Visual Fault Locator), is a fundamental tool for the technician installing and maintaining fiber-optic networks. The compact AFL VFI4 launches a high-power red laser into the fiber, delivering exceptional brightness and range when locating defects in single-mode and multimode fibers. Light escapes at sharp bends and breaks — in both jacketed and bare fibers — and at mismatched connectors, making the fault immediately visible. The universal connector interface mates with many connector types without the need for an adapter.

Rugged and compact

The rugged VFI4 is designed for the rigors of field work. It offers a range of up to 10 km, fits on a keychain and comes with caps that protect the laser port. It provides a continuous (CW) and a pulsing mode, and powered by a single AA battery it operates for up to 30 hours.

Installation and activation

The VFI4 is used for quick continuity checks, fiber tracing, splice verification and pass/fail validation of mechanical connectors. It is an excellent complement to any OTDR, since it locates faults that lie within its dead zone.

An essential diagnostic tool

The VFI4 reveals sharp bends, breaks, faulty connectors and other defects through which light “escapes”. It also works well for end-to-end continuity checks and for identifying connectors in patch panels and fibers during splicing. The VFI4-L version offers lower power (1.0 mW) and a 4 km range.
