The Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA) from Innolume is a component that amplifies an optical signal directly in the optical domain, without conversion to an electrical signal. Amplification takes place in a single-mode semiconductor waveguide that acts as the gain medium. Thanks to proprietary quantum-dot technology, Innolume SOA amplifiers offer a gain of up to 40 dB and a wide gain bandwidth of up to 110 nm in the 770–1350 nm range.
A semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is a component whose structure is similar to a laser diode, in which the cavity mirrors are transparent and feedback is suppressed. Signal amplification occurs through stimulated emission: the injected current creates a population inversion in the active region, and photons of the input signal stimulate the emission of further photons with the same phase and wavelength. The chip design uses an angled waveguide and anti-reflection coatings that limit facet reflection to below 0.001%, minimizing spectral ripple. Thanks to their compact dimensions, wide bandwidth and low power consumption, SOAs are the optimal choice for telecommunications and optical signal processing.
High gain: selected Innolume SOA amplifiers amplify the optical signal up to 40 dB.
Wide gain bandwidth: 3 dB bandwidth up to 110 nm in selected models.
Feedback suppression: angled waveguide and anti-reflection coatings (<0.001% reflection) reducing spectral ripple.
Low noise figure: from 6.5 dB, ensuring minimal degradation of the signal-to-noise ratio.
Integration: can be embedded in photonic integrated circuits (PIC) – optical processors, WDM converters, laser sources.
Housing options: 14-pin SOA module, chip on submount, or as a bare die.
Configuration: individual selection of wavelength, spectral width and output power.
