Displacement Sensor

A short-range displacement gauge that measures the relative position between two fixed points. It is based on Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) technology. The standard measuring range is from 0 to 50 mm. The sensor has connectors on both sides and can be used standalone or in series as part of various FBG sensor arrays. Installing and wiring such arrays is significantly less expensive and less cumbersome than comparable electronic measurement networks.

The displacement sensor is the optical fiber equivalent of potentiometric, inductive or capacitive displacement indicators and can be mounted directly on the surface of the monitored structure.

The displacement sensor features high accuracy and resolution as well as immunity to electrical sparks and electromagnetic interference. It is suitable for remote sensing and can be installed several kilometers away from the measurement unit. It is protected against water, ensuring an IP67 protection rating.

Applications

The optical fiber displacement sensor can be used to measure changes in the position of fixed points on structures (due to strain, compression and bending). This enables continuous monitoring of the structural condition of the structure, displacement or unwanted deformations in (concrete) walls, bridges, buildings, ships, etc. The sensor can also be used to monitor illegal access or acts of vandalism at various facilities. Electrical power is not required on site, and the interrogator can be located tens of kilometers away.
